J. Suckling Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne 2019 99/100
"Black cherries, lavender, black mushrooms, lead pencil and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with a powerful and polished tannin structure that follows through to the very end. Pure, silky texture. Fascinating aftertaste of ripe fruit, yet it’s fresh and tense. Some orange peel, too. Glorious at the end. So well crafted and pointed. This needs another three to five years to integrate but already extremely impressive.

Sattes, kraftvolles Rubingranat. Kompakte Nase mit viel Waldfrüchten, Himbeere und Brombeere, dazu satte Noten nach Tabak, im Hintergrund Gewürznelken. Viel geschliffenes, feinmaschiges Tannin, präsente Frucht, zeigt im hinteren Verlauf schonen Druck, langer Nachhall.
Wine Critic Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne 2017 94/100
Very open in the primary profile showing notes of black prunes, black tea leaves, camphor, burnt mandarin rind and marjoram. Full bodied, light tannins of pleasant workmanship and a finale in the radiant, essential mold. Better from 2023.
J. Suckling Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne 2017 94/100
Ripe fruit with lavender and sandalwood as well as some new wood on the nose. Medium to full body, with firm and structured tannins that are polished and curated. Needs time to soften and come together. Bigger style for Pacenti due to the hot vintage.

The Pacenti estate was established in 1970, with the purchase of the property north of Montalcino (Pelagrilli) by Siro, who then proceeded to plant some important vineyards, which are still there today, in the fresh, clay soils of the land overlooking Siena. In 1988, management passed into the hands of Giancarlo. This was the year of the harvest in which Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino Siro Pacenti were bottled for the first time. At the beginning of the Nineties, the estate expanded to include land south of Montalcino (Piancornello). Here, in soils rich in minerals, at the end of the Sixties Giancarlo’s maternal grandfather had planted five hectares of vineyard which were to prove particularly important in determining the characteristics of Siro Pacenti wines. This is now where the Sangiovese rootings used in the estate’s new plantations are reproduced. The Nineties were also marked by the start of the partnership with the University of Bordeaux and the first experiments on phenolic maturity applied to Sangiovese (Yves Glories). The new cellar was built between 2001 and 2004, combining technology and experience with respect for the grapes and the land.

96 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Aromas of tilled earth, new leather, blue flower and forest floor mingle with whiffs of cake spice on this delicious wine. Both elegant and earthy, the smooth palate delivers crushed black cherry, star anise, nutmeg and an earthy truffle note alongside lithe tannins before a minty close. Drink through 2028. Abv: 14%. (Jan 2023)"
Luca Gardini Brunello di Montalcino 2018 96/100
96 points Luca Gardini: "The long-awaited and desired debut in the Brunello typology for the master of Rosso di Montalcino. In a version of great compactness, it comes as a confirmation of the vocation. From the north-eastern area of Montalcino and a raw material rich in tension, notes of black currant to the nose, touches of laurel and licorice, then orange peel and mint. The sip is brackish-sapid, dense and taut. (Oct 2022)"

The story between Etlivin and Gorelli continues. After the collaboration with Due Portine - Gorelli, and Le Potazzine, we start again with the Gorelli company. Giuseppe Gorelli, after having founded Le Potazzine and given the company to his daughters, in 2017 decided to embark on a new path by founding a new company in Montalcino: La Gorelli. The first vintage of Brunello will start in 2023, while the first wine produced is a Rosso di Montalicino 2018, which both for price and quality can be exchanged for a Brunello. In addition to Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello, it also produces Brigo, a pure Sangiovese of extreme elegance. Total hectares 2.3. Bottles produced 20k.

There’s freshness and balance to this 2017 Brunello, with dark-cherry, walnut and dried-flower aromas that follow through to a medium body, firm tannins and a long, vivid finish. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold.
Robert Parker Brunello di Montalcino Selc. Piero 2017 93/100
One of the higher Vineyards in the region between 410-450 meters, Vigna di Piero is a 'selection massale' which was started in the 1970's by Pierluigi Talenti.
Quite dark in colour, brooding aromas of dark fruit, cherries, and black plums as well as dark mineral /smoke notes. The palate shows great concentration of soft sweet fruit but with a very firm tannin core.Finishes complex and powerful with great persistence. The wine is aged in a mixture of 500 liter and 2500 liter Barrels for at least 24 months.
J. Suckling Brunello di Montalcino Selc. Piero 2017 93/100
The Talenti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Piero is softly contoured and nicely balanced with a plush and enriched side that contrasts heavier aromas of spice and smoke. The wine reaches good balance while showing some of the density and extra concentration that you might associate with a hot vintage such as 2017. Fruit comes from a two-hectare parcel with galestro soils. Just 3,800 bottles were made.

In the 1950s Pierluigi Talenti purchased the property and the lands that he had fallen in love with and decided to move from Romagna to the gently rolling, sunny hills of Montalcino. Over the years, he devoted his time to clonal research into the locally grown Sangiovese, taking his wines to the highest levels of quality. Today, Riccardo Talenti continues that research, with the utmost respect for tradition, working with the very same passion and determination. The estate has been developed around an old farm called “Pian di Conte”, not far from Sant’Angelo in Colle, on the southern slope of the municipality of Montalcino, which has been restructured and expanded over the years. The property occupies an area of 40 hectares, among vineyards, olive groves, orchards and seed crops, surrounded by age-old holm-oak woods, characteristic of the Montalcino area.

"Once again, Sesti’s Phenomena tops this year’s Riserva releases. As always, it marks a specific cosmic event: in 2018, this was the super blue blood moon of 31 January, the most important lunar eclipse of the 21st century. For a wine that has aged in cask for so long (52 months), this is impossibly fresh and well preserved. Just hinting at its splendour, aromas build steadily with dried lavender, basil and sweet wet soil. The palate teases tenderly with an initial caress and sumptuousness of fruit, then reveals its secure, authoritative grip. Tangy tamarind underscores raspberry in the tightly wound core, while it maintains a very savoury and sapid character throughout."

An exhilarating nose starts with a slap of blood and earth, like a spooky autumn evening, before lightening into the wild, herbal aroma of a diviner's tea. Finely grained, captivating tannins create a feeling of uncanny weightlessness

Carlo (born in 1880) – establishment and production of wine to sell unbottled. An enterprising farmer from the Langa hills, the son of a family of poor sharecroppers. In 1921 he bought the Rombone farm in Treiso, then an outlying hamlet of Barbaresco, today a self-governing commune. There he immediately began to produce wine, which he used to sell, unbottled, to local restaurateurs. Fiorenzo (born in 1923) – the sale of grapes. The second last of Carlo’ s seven children, four brothers and three daughters, he inherited a small plot of land from his father in the early 1960s, when the property was split up among the four boys of the family. Since the resources left were scarce, Fiorenzo decided to discontinue his father’ s wine cellar business and to sell the grapes, which were much in demand among local merchants at the time. Bruno (born in 1951) – departure, return to the vineyards, the first bottling. Like most of the local youngsters, he was allured in the 1960s, the years of the economic boom, by the promise of a better life. He thus left Treiso for the city. After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher in a school in Alba and subsequently at the hotel management school in Barolo, where he introduced food and wine to the syllabus for students aspiring to a career in the catering business. But his bond with Treiso and his home turf was never broken. In the meantime, the old generation of farmers who had shaped the surrounding hills was slowly beginning to die out, and it seemed there was no one left to accept their inheritance. The turnaround came when Bruno suggested his family stop selling grapes, which were fetching poor prices, and fit out a cellar to make and sell wine, using fewer bunches of grapes per vine to allow them to ripen better. It was a simple idea and it may seem obvious today. But in these parts at that time it was revolutionary. Pruvuma (Let’ s give it a go) was the only word his father Fiorenzo had to say. It was 1982, the year Azienda Agricola Nada Fiorenzo produced its first bottle. Danilo (born in 1986) the fourth generation: winegrowers are born and winegrowers they remain. The early years of the new millennium crowned the new generation’ s complete discovery of farming and winegrowing: youngsters who were motivated, who could speak English, who were respectful of traditions, mindful of the environment. One such is Bruno’ s son Danilo who, after graduating, decided to follow the way of the vine. His choice marked another turnaround in a story that began almost a century ago and is now projected towards the future. Danilo has begun to write the chapter of tomorrow today, treasuring the heritage his elders have handed down to him and helped in his task by the generosity of a soil that has been there for millions of years – the soil of the Langa Hills.

There’s freshness and balance to this 2017 Brunello, with dark-cherry, walnut and dried-flower aromas that follow through to a medium body, firm tannins and a long, vivid finish. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold.

Growing grapes and crafting high quality wines have always been our family tradition. We were born and raised in the hills that link Grinzane Cavour to Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of Langhe, part of the Unesco Heritage.
Careful work in the vineyard, commitment in the winery, respect for the environment: a passion for wine that has been handed down for decades, in Langhe, where the best plots are selected for the production of Barolo. This history talks about the territory, in full respect of the tradition. Giacomo Grimaldi starts selling grapes and in the 60s (his son) Giovanni Grimaldi begins to produce wine and sell it in bulk. Giovanni builds our pillars: he is very careful about winegrowing, in full respect of the vineyard and wine. He bottles the wines in the best vintages creating an important library stock and values the vineyards and grapes.
Questing for quality from the vineyard to the bottle is already a key aspect of Giovanni’s philosophy while he has been the beating heart of the business for many years.
In the following decades, our history is marked by the work in the vineyard and the careful winemaking which both enhance the quality of the grapes. These remain two key aspects and are still crucial in our approach to the vine today. A new chapter begins: Bruna Grimaldi and her husband Franco Fiorino bring enthusiasm and new competences to the winery. They buy selected plots in order to produce wines only from their own vineyards. A new winery is built. The work is improved and our wines are proposed to new markets. Since 2013, Simone and Martina, son and daughter of Bruna and Franco, bring their passion and enthusiasm to the family business. In the recent years, their parents’ experience has combined with the different studies of Simone and Martina while our brand, Bruna Grimaldi, becomes more recognized, thanks to the quality of the wines.
A family passion, a knowledge handed down to generations and improved over the years that put the vineyards and the meticulous work at the heart of the business.

J. Suckling Pinot Noir Long Valley AVA - Clear Lake USA 2023 92/100
“A light-bodied, lithe and agile wine that’s built on vibrant acidity for a fresh, mouthwatering texture and elegant fruit, tea and earth flavors. Moderate tannins brace sour cherry, red cherry, black tea and mellow spice flavors.”

Outlier Wine Company is another project by excellent Bravium winemaker, Derek Rohlffs. His 2023 pinot noir is made from a blend of sixty-eight percent Lake County fruit and thirty-two percent Mendocino County fruit in this vintage. The wine comes in at a cool 12.3 percent alcohol in this vintage and offers up a lovely, complex bouquet of cherries, pomegranate, raw cocoa, a touch of Mendocino dill tones, a lovely base of soil, peonies and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, medium-full and intensely flavored, with a lovely core of red fruit, modest tannins and fine length and grip on the complex and very well balanced finish. This is a lovely middleweight that is approachable out of the blocks, but has the fine balance to also age gracefully. Good juice.” —John Gilman
Wine Enthusiast Pinot Noir Long Valley AVA - Clear Lake USA 2022 94/100
This wine is rich, with aromas of dark cherry, plum, orange marmalade, dried sage and notes of potpourri on the nose. The flavors on the palate are black strawberry, raspberry and blood orange zest, layered with clove, Key lime-vanilla cream, mineral and a dry, supple finish. Pair with grilled salmon with miso glaze and bamboo shoots.

Outlier is a brand new project from talented winemaker Derek Rohlffs. His 2022 Pinot Noir hails solely from the organically-farmed Long Valley Ranch... The wine is raised for seven months in older French oak casks prior to bottling and comes in at a svelte 13.2 percent octane. The wine possesses a lovely aromatic constellation of black cherries, dark berries, woodsmoke, dark soil tones, incipient notes of cola, a dollop of Mendocino herb tones and a discreet framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core of black fruit, good soil undertow, moderate tannins and a long, well-balanced and promising finish. This is approachable right out of the blocks, but I would be inclined to tuck it away in the cellar for three or four years and let its backend tannins soften up properly. A fine value. 2026-2045.

As a winemaker, I am a minimalist in every sense of the word, especially when it comes to Pinot Noir,” said Derek. Derek founded Bravium―a Latin word meaning “gift” or “prize”―in 2007. His widely acclaimed small-lot Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are characterized by excellent structure and aging potential, along with invigorating acidity, which allows for seamless pairing with a variety of foods. Of all the influences that have shaped Derek’s path, his family’s Cherokee heritage has been the steady drumbeat that led him to the right places at the right times. His parents gifted him the name “Winter Hawk” as a child. To this day, the sight of a hawk feather in his vineyard reminds Derek that he is fulfilling his destiny. That rich heritage gently guides his hand in the cellar. For Derek, terroir is a gift.

"Bravium boasts four words on its homepage: Sun, soil, wind, and fog. They make wine in the unique northern AVA of Mendocino, specifically Anderson Valley. And this wine is a good example of the kind of balance wines here can attain. The wine is drying on the nose with some pear fruit but mostly that clean river rock-like minerality. The drying sensation carries to the mouthfeel along with a welcome alcoholic depth. There is oak here but it’s almost imperceptible giving the wine its needed depth."
